Shutters vs. Drapes
Ever wonder the difference in shutters vs. drapes. Well, here is a snapshot comparison of two of the most popular window coverings in use today. Both shutters and drapes are window coverings. Each provide privacy, but the similarities end there. The covering that you choose depends on your personal style and your budget.
History
-
It is believed that shutters were used by the Ancient Greeks to provide light control, privacy and ventilation. The definition of Drape is to cover in cloth. Cloth was invented by the Egyptians, and this is where draperies find their origin.
Types
-
Shutters come in wood, vinyl and aluminum. They can be purchased with louvers (horizontal wood that can be adjusted open or closed) in widths of 2.5 or 3.5 inches. Drapes, on the other hand, are made from fabric. This type of window treatment can be shirred on a pole, hung from rings or traverse by use of a rod meant to open and close horizontally.
Effects
-
Shutters provide a less formal look and are popular in the Southwest where the sun is strong. Draperies can be formal or casual depending on the fabric that you choose. Drapes are left open or closed. Shutters on the other hand, can remain stationary while the louvers adjust allowing light and air to pass through.
Considerations
-
Shutters are permanently attached to a window sash or inside the frame. They can last indefinitely. Drapes, however, have a high probability of fading and becoming worn with time. Certain fabrics lose their style appeal over time.
